John Hartson believes Arsenal’s defence remains their biggest weakness ahead of the new Premier League season.

The Gunners finished in fifth spot in the Premier League table last term to miss out on a place in the Champions League.

The north London side parted company with Arsene Wenger at the end of the campaign and turned to Spanish coach Unai Emery.

The Gunners struggled defensively after Arsenal conceded 54 times in 38 games in the Premier League last term.

Emery has signed orussia Dortmund centre-half Sokratis Papastathopoulos to bolster the Spanish head coach’s back four.

Experienced Switzerland international Stephan Lichtsteiner completed a free transfer from Serie A champions Juventus.

Bernd Leno was brought in from Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen in a £20m deal to provide Petr Cech and David Ospina with competition for a starting spot.

Former Arsenal striker Hartson isn’t convinced that the Gunners have improved enough at the back.

The Gunners have signed five players in the summer transfer window to bolster Emery’s options under Wenger, including Sampdoria midfielder Lucas Torreira and Lorient teenager Matteo Guendouzi.

The north London side lost 3-0 to Premier League champions Manchester City in the League Cup final last term.
