Graeme Souness sends message to Unai Emery about Arsenal transfers
The Liverpool FC legend believes Unai Emery needs more Arsenal signings in January
Graeme Souness believes the Arsenal heirarchy will need to back Unai Emery in the January transfer window.
The Gunners turned to Emery at the end of the 2017-18 Premier League season after Arsenal parted company with Arsene Wenger following a sixth-placed finish.
The north London side signed five players in the 2018 summer transfer window to stamp his mark on the Gunners squad in the hope of breaking back into the top four.
Arsenal signed Juventus defender Stephan Lichtsteiner, Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper Bernd Leno, Sampdoria midfielder Lucas Torreira, Borussia Dortmund defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Lorient teenager Matteo Guendouzi this summer.
However, the Gunners lost 2-0 to defending Premier League champions Manchester City in their Premier League opener at The Emirates on Sunday afternoon.
Former Liverpool FC captain Souness believes Emery will need more signings to bolster Emery’s squad in the next transfer window if Arsenal are to make significant progress.
“Time is not the manager’s friend, whether he gets four transfer windows or not, he will need time,” Souness told Sky Sports.
“I think he can work on the players he’s got, make them better and more willing to do the hard yards and hope there’s something coming through.
“Hopefully he has another budget at Christmas time to work with.”
Arsenal lost 2-0 to Manchester City following goals from Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva in their Premier League opener in north London on Sunday evening.
The Gunners will make the trip across the English capital to take on their bitter rivals Chelsea FC at Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening.
