Alvaro Morata reveals why he has opted to switch his shirt number at Chelsea FC
Alvaro Morata has revealed that he switched his Chelsea FC shirt number to commemorate the birth of his twins.
Morata’s wife Alice Campello gave birth to the couple’s twins who were born on 29 July, and the Chelsea FC striker has opted to switch his number from 9 to 29.
The former Real Madrid striker was given the number nine shirt at Stamford Bridge upon his arrival last summer, but the 25-year-old has opted to switch it up ahead of his second campaign at the club.
Now, Morata has opened up on why he opted to switch his shirt number ahead of his first season under new manager Maurizio Sarri.
Morata told Chelsea FC’s website: “It is a day I will never forget, to welcome my twin sons into the world.
“My family is so important to me and I want to honour them and my wife, Alice, when I am on the pitch which is why I have decided to take a different number for the new season and remember this special day by adding the number 2 to my shirt.
“I am sorry to the fans who may have bought a number 9 with my name already, but I hope you understand my tribute and that it will not be a problem and we can make you a new one with the 29.
“Thank you for your support and I hope this year there will be lots more to celebrate.”
Morata will be hoping that his new squad number will help to bring out some of his best form next season as he looks to bounce back from his disappointing campaign last term.
The striker started his first season at Stamford Bridge strongly but his form tailed off in the second part of the campaign after he struggled with a back injury.
Chelsea FC will be aiming to at least break back into the top four next season after they finished in fifth place and without a trophy last term.
