Manager replies when asked about Chelsea FC signing 25-year-old
Stoke City manager Gary Rowlett is optimistic Chelsea FC target Jack Butland will stay at the Potters
Jack Butland will still be at Stoke City at the start of the new Championship season, according to Potters boss Gary Rowlett.
The England international has been linked with a potential move to Chelsea FC over the past couple of weeks given the uncertainty surrounding Thibaut Courtois’ future at Stamford Bridge.
The Belgium international has less than 12 months to run on his current deal and the 27-year-old has been linked with a £31m move to Champions League holders Real Madrid.
Butland would be available in a cut-price deal this summer following Stoke’s relegation to the Championship despite the English goalkeeper’s best efforts to prevent their demotion.
Chelsea FC have endured a difficult summer transfer window but Italian head coach Maurizio Sarri was finally announced as Antonio Conte’s permanent replacement last month.
Stoke manager Rowlett believes Butland will remain at Stoke beyond the summer transfer window despite speculation linking the England international with a move to Chelsea FC.
Rowett said: “I expect him to stay, I hope he stays. I’m also pragmatic enough to know it’s football and anything can happen in the last few days of the window.
“I imagine he would be the type of player who some teams would covet. I’m a realist but I hope he’s still here.
“I can only react and answer what’s in front of me. The answer is we haven’t had an offer which the club feel is financially viable – or I don’t think any strong offer yet.
“Jack has never made any real moves to want to leave and he’s contracted to us and we’re not even a week away from the first game.”
Chelsea FC finished in fifth spot in the Premier League last season to miss out on a place in the Champions League.
The Blues have only signed Napoli midfielder Jorginho and veteran England goalkeeper Rob Green this summer.
