Jurgen Klopp raves about 21-year-old Liverpool FC star
The Liverpool FC boss is pleased with the centre-back after his return from multiple injuries
Jurgen Klopp claims that he never had any doubts about centre-back Joe Gomez’s ability to play in the centre of defence despite being blighted by injury.
Gomez signed for Liverpool FC from Charlton Athletic in 2015 for £3.5m where he mostly played at right-back.
Upon joining Liverpool, he started playing at centre-back and has impressed in between significant injury lay-offs.
And Klopp is excited to have the player back fully-fit after he played all 90 minutes in the 4-0 victory over West Ham last Sunday.
Klopp told the Liverpool FC website: “I was never in doubt about Joe and his ability to play at centre-half, but he needed time after a long injury.
“Now he’s fit and he’s a very good football player, he can play the position good.
“Together with Virgil (van Dijk), they have a very good understanding – on a personal level as well, that’s really cool.”
Gomez has missed 444 days of his Liverpool career due to injury amounting to 74 games, the most serious of which was early on in his career on Merseyside where he injured a cruciate ligament.
He returned from ankle surgery last Sunday against West Ham where he played the whole game and got a clean sheet, alongside the highly praised Virgil van Dijk.
Jürgen Klopp’s side travel to Crystal Palace on Monday where they will come up against much more dynamic, and well-organised side who are set up by former Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson.
Gomez is expected to feature alongside van Dijk, as Klopp will hope to make it two wins from two and get one over the club that helped deny them of the title in 2014 courtesy of a 3-3 draw.
