Martin Keown raves about new Liverpool FC partnership
The Arsenal legend was impressed with the performance of Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk last weekend
Martin Keown believes Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk will be one of the best defensive partnerships in the Premier League this season.
The Reds signed Van Dijk in a club record £75m deal from Premier League rivals Southampton in the summer transfer window.
Van Dijk partnered Dejan Lovren at the centre of defence to help Liverpool FC reach the Champions League final before a 3-1 loss to Real Madrid.
However, Jurgen Klopp opted to start Gomez alongside Van Dijk for the visit of West Ham United last weekend as Lovren continued his recovery from his World Cup exploits.
Liverpool FC eased to a comfortable 4-0 win over West Ham courtesy of goals from Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Daniel Sturridge at Anfield last weekend.
Former Arsenal defender Keown has been impressed with Gomez and Van Dijk at centre-half for Klopp’s side.
“I was seriously impressed by the partnership of Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk in the centre of Liverpool’s defence,” Keown told the Daily Mail.
“There will be few better partnerships in the Premier League this season.
“I have been arguing for some time that Gomez should be playing in that position and against West Ham, he showed why.”
Liverpool FC finished in fourth place in the Premier League table last term to ensure their continued participation in the Champions League.
The Reds haven’t won the Premier League title but ended up in second place in 2002, 2009 and 2014.
Liverpool FC appointed Klopp as Brendan Rodgers’ replacement in October 2015 following a slow start to the season.
