Graeme Souness believes a successful season for Liverpool FC would be a title challenge and a trophy.

The Reds are in second place in the Premier League table following a positive start to the 2018-19 season.

The Merseyside outfit were 4-0 winners against West Ham United in their Premier League opener at Anfield.

Liverpool FC edged to a 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Monday night to lay down a marker in the title race.

Jurgen Klopp has improved the Liverpool FC defence over the past nine months with the additions of some key personnel.

Virgil van Dijk moved in a £75m deal to bolster their centre-half options before Brazil number one Alisson Becker sealed a £67m switch.

Liverpool FC finished 25 points behind Manchester City in the title race last term to highlight the gap between the two teams.

Former Reds midfielder Souness believes Liverpool FC need to challenge for the Premier League crown this term.

“For Man City to win, they have to finish in front of Liverpool,” Souness told Irish radio station Newstalk.

“They are the two outstanding teams. Hopefully Liverpool will stop conceding goals. It would be a success if they win a FA Cup or League Cup, reach the Champions League semi-finals or final, it would be a success.”

The Reds signed AS Monaco star Fabinho, RB Leipzig midfielder Naby Keita, Stoke City playmaker Xherdan Shaqiri and AS Roma’s Alisson in the summer.

Liverpool FC suffered a 3-1 loss to Real Madrid in the Champions League final in Kiev back in May.
