Mark Lawrenson: Jurgen Klopp still hasn’t made key Liverpool FC decision
The Liverpool FC legend claims Jurgen Klopp still hasn't decided upon Virgil van Dijk's centre-half partner
Jurgen Klopp still hasn’t decided upon a centre-half partner for Liverpool FC record signing Virgil van Dijk, Mark Lawrenson has claimed.
The Merseyside outfit signed Van Dijk at the second time of asking in the January transfer window after a protracted pursiot of the Dutchman.
Liverpool FC made Van Dijk the most expensive defender in the world after the Reds agreed a £75m transfer fee with Southampton.
Van Dijk partnered Dejan Lovren at the back to help the Reds reach the Champions League final before a 3-1 loss to Real Madrid in Kiev back in May.
England international Joe Gomez has started the new season as Van Dijk’s centre-half partner in the absence of Lovren.
The 21-year-old impressed in Liverpool FC’s 2-0 win at Crystal Palce to suggest the former Charlton man could be the long-term answer.
Ex-Cameroon international Joel Matip has struggled with injuries to limit his playing time with the former Celtic defender.
Former Liverpool FC defender Lawrenson believes Klopp still hasn’t made a decision about Van Dijk’s centre-half partner.
“I don’t think Klopp knows which of the other centre-halves will be his partner,” Lawrenson told Newstalk.
“Gomez is doing very well. He has Matip and Lovren.”
Liverpool FC finished in fourth place in the Premier League table last term to ensure their continued participation in the Champions League.
