Merson predicts how many goals Liverpool FC’s Salah will score this season
The former Arsenal midfielder backs the PFA player of the year to follow up his record-breaking season with another successful campaign
Paul Merson believes Mo Salah needs to only score 20 goals this season for his second season with Liverpool to be a success.
The Egypt international opened his 2018-19 account on Sunday against West Ham to already start to silence critics who have suggested that he will struggle to set the Premier League alight once again this year.
Indeed, Salah required just 19 minutes of Liverpool FC’s opening game of thie new Premier League campaign to open his account for the season.
After scoring a record-breaking 32 league goals last season, Merson believes Salah will easily score at least 20 times this term.
Merson told Sky Sports’ The Debate: “Can Salah score that many goals again? I thought if he got 20 goals that he would do well.
“Looking at Sunday’s game, he will do that easily.”
Salah drifted in behind West Ham’s defensive line to tap in at the back post from Andy Robertson’s pinpoint cross.
Manuel Pellegrini’s risk of employing a high line in the opening game of the season against such a potent forward line as Liverpool FC’s was catastrophic, as displayed when the Reds doubled their lead in a similar way through Sadio Mane.
Premier League managers will focus their efforts on restricting Salah’s goal-scoring opportunities, however, there is very little teams can do about the blistering pace with which Jürgen Klopp’s side counter-attack.
