Jurgen Klopp raves about Liverpool FC star’s impressive start to the season
The Liverpool FC boss is impressed with Sadio Mane's excellent start to the Premier League season
Jurgen Klopp has heaped praise on Sadio Mane after the Liverpool FC forward’s prolific start to the Premier League season.
The Senegal international’s pre season was cut short due to his participation at the World Cup in Russia during the summer.
Mane scored twice in Liverpool FC’s 4-0 win against West Ham United to help Klopp’s side to make an impressive start to their title challenge.
The African forward netted a super counter attacking goal in added time to help Liverpool FC record a 2-0 win at Crystal Palace on Monday night.
Mane scored 10 times in 29 games in the Premier League last season, while the former Southampton star netted a further 10 goals in the Champions League.
His electric start to the 2017-18 season was cut short following his sending off in a 5-0 loss to eventual Premier League champions Manchester City in September 2017.
Mane had scored in each of Liverpool FC’s opening three Premier League fixtures before his three-match suspension led to a loss of form upon his return.
Speaking to Liverpool FC’s website about Mane’s momentum at the start of the current campaign, Klopp said:
“Sadio did start pretty well last year. He was in fantastic shape then came the City game and an unlucky situation [with the red card]. That was not good.
“I think he had an injury then as well, a little one. Now he’s much more secure that this is his level.
“The players surprise themselves sometimes. ‘Wow, really? That’s how good I am?’ We all need to show our best and get used to it.”
He added: “Sadio is a very consistent player for us. His work rate is great. We have a very strange 4-5-1 formation with Sadio as a midfielder, Bobby [Firmino] being a midfielder more or less and Mo [Salah] being a striker, even though he plays in a little different position.
“We talk about the defensive work rate they put in and that’s really important.
“Pre-season was not the longest [for Mane], three weeks after three weeks of holiday. I think the first game he and Mo played was [Manchester] City, right? That was after three or four days’ training.
“It’s quality. We have to make sure we can show that every week. Who scores the goals is not too important but it was very important for us and very nice for Sadio that he could do it.”
Liverpool FC will take on Brighton and Hove Albion in their next Premier League fixture at Anfield on Saturday evening.
