Jamie Carragher makes Liverpool FC claim about Virgil van Dijk
Jamie Carragher has hailed Virgil Van Dijk as the Premier League's best defender
Jamie Carragher has lauded Liverpool FC centre-back Virgil Van Dijk as the best in the Premier League.
Liverpool FC picked up their second consecutive win of the new season on Monday night, beating Crystal Palace 2-0 at Selhurst Park.
Although Roy Hodgson’s team managed to stifle their opponents for large periods and play their part in a competitive contest, Jurgen Klopp’s men stood firm at the back and emerged with an impressive clean sheet.
Goals from James Milner and Sadio Mane secured the three points for Liverpool FC but it was in the heart of defence where the team truly shone on the night.
£75 million January signing Virgil Van Dijk was colossal at centre-half with Joe Gomez alongside him and Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher believes that the Dutchman is now the best performing defender in the league.
Carragher told Sky Sports: “I knew Van Dijk was a good player, but he is better than what I thought. We’ve always said Liverpool can’t win the Premier League because of their defence, but now they have Van Dijk, who I think is the best centre back in the Premier League.
“I can’t think of a defender off the top of my head that is better. He’s the man to step into the position Vincent Kompany has had over the last four seasons as that leader and colossus. They are very similar as players – there is nothing they lack. When Kompany was at his best three years ago, I didn’t think there was a centre-back that was better than him.”
Liverpool are now sitting pretty in second place in the early Premier League standings, up there with Manchester City, Tottenham and Chelsea, who have all also won their opening fixtures.
Next up for Klopp’s side is Brighton FC at Anfield on Saturday and supporters will expect their good start to the season to continue with another three points.
