Jurgen Klopp raves about Virgil van Dijk after Liverpool FC win
Virgil van Dijk was singled out for praise by Liverpool FC boss Jurgen Klopp after their 2-0 win at Selhurst Park on Monday
Liverpool FC manager Jurgen Klopp praised Virgil van Dijk for his display in Monday night’s 2-0 win against Crystal Palace.
Klopp’s side ran out comfortable winners on the night after goals from James Milner and Sadio Mane but the scoreline didn’t reflect the competitive nature of the game.
Roy Hodgson’s Crystal Palace were well organised and determined throughout the contest, making life difficult for Liverpool FC from the start and reducing them to only a handful of clear-cut chances.
A controversial penalty decision gave the away side the chance to open the scoring and James Milner duly obliged from the spot, before Sadio Mane added a second, rounding off a swift counter-attack in the dying moments of the game.
Defensively Liverpool looked solid and Van Dijk, in particular, was colossal at the back, which his manager was quick to allude to in his post-match comments.
Klopp told Liverpool’s website: “It was really, really good. It’s obvious. Quality costs a specific price, it’s with cars like that, with a lot of things like that and with players as well, that’s why we paid it [the fee for Van Dijk].
“Nobody thinks about it anymore and that’s good because he’s a player in this market, in the moment, he’s at least worth it.
“We don’t know what will happen in the future [with transfer fees], but it’s not important to us. He loves playing with these boys and that’s the most important thing for me.”
The Dutch defender moved to Anfield back in January and has since become a fixture in the team at centre-half alongside either Dejan Lovren or Joe Gomez.
Van Dijk cost £75m from fellow Premier League outfit Southampton FC and so far it appears that he is paying back that hefty sum with his consistently high levels of performance.
