The Reds are preparing to welcome the east London side to Anfield this weekend as they look to try and get their campaign off to a solid note.
Liverpool FC will be aiming to be one of the main challengers for the Premier League trophy this season after they finished in fourth place and without a trophy last term.
Jurgen Klopp’s side have been busy in the summer transfer window, with the Reds having brought in Naby Keita, Fabinho, Xherdan Shaqiri and Alisson Becker ahead of the new campaign.
And Lawrenson is not expecting his former employers to have any problems when they take on West Ham United on Merseyside this weekend.
Speaking in an interview with BBC Sport, Lawrenson said: “Both of these teams have had a busy summer in the transfer market and, after struggling last season, West Ham have got to be aiming for the top 10 this time.
“Liverpool are aspiring to finish a bit higher, obviously, and when I look at the signings that all the teams have made, they look like they have done the best business.
“I think the Reds will push City for the title this season and I am backing them to begin with a win.”
Liverpool FC are still aiming to win their first trophy since Klopp’s appointment at Anfield back in October 2015.
The Reds reached the Champions League final last season but ended up losing 3-1 to Real Madrid in the showpiece in Kiev back in May.
