Jose Mourinho told why Eric Bailly is struggling at Man United
The former Irish defender Kevin Kilbane explains why Eric Bailly is struggling at Manchester United
Kevin Kilbane has pinpointed why Eric Bailly has struggled at Manchester United.
Jose Mourinho made the Ivory Coast international his first Manchester United signing in the 2016 summer transfer window.
The Ivorian defender made a strong start to his Manchester United career before Bailly struggled with a serious knee problem in a 4-0 loss to Chelsea FC.
Bailly hasn’t really managed to hit top form since his recovery from a knee problem to raise questions about his future at Old Trafford.
Manchester United were even linked with the potential sale of Bailly, although the Ivorian defender is rated as a top Premier League defender.
Bailly was particularly disappointing in Manchester United’s 3-2 loss to Brighton and Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium.
The Ivory Coast international conceded a penalty during their 3-2 defeat by Chris Hughton’s side on the coast.
Former Irish defender Kilbane believes Bailly is guilty of rash defending in the Manchester United team.
“He goes in with two feet every time he tackles,” Kilbane told Newstalk. “He runs the risk of yellow cards or giving penalties away.
“He has relied on his pace throughout his career. The ball comes over his shoulders and he can allow the striker to get away from him and still get back.
“The level the strikers are at now, if you let them get away, they’ll get a strike off.”
Manchester United failed to sign a centre-half in the summer transfer window to further improve their defence.
The Red Devils were linked with a potential swoop to sign Leicester defender Harry Maguire, Spurs star Toby Alderweireld and Everton’s Yerry Mina.
