Gary Neville slams Man United duo after Brighton defeat
The Man United legend wasn't impressed with Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof
Gary Neville believes Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof are lacking confidence after a nightmare afternoon in Brighton on Sunday.
Manchester United succumbed to a disappointing 3-2 defeat against Brighton in the Premier League, with Lindelof and Bailly in particular to blame defensively.
The former allowed Glen Murray to steal in at the front post to score the opening goal for Chris Hughton’s side and the latter gave away a soft penalty right on the stroke of half-time.
There seemed to be a lack of communication between the pair throughout the game as Brighton overpowered United in a contest which most experts and supporters would have expected the Red Devils to win.
Former United defender Neville highlighted the defensive duo post-match for their poor performances.
Neville said on Sky Sports: “What we’ve seen today are two players in Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof who are lacking confidence a little bit or maybe they aren’t quite good enough. Maybe the answer lies somewhere in between.
“To me, they look like second-fiddle centre-backs. If they had, for instance, John Terry, Jaap Stam, Rio Ferdinand or Nemanja Vidic alongside them then they would probably be alright. I call myself a second-fiddle centre-back, if that.
“I played a lot of games at centre-back for Manchester United, but I needed someone alongside me of real stature and strength – and a full-back of stature and strength alongside me – or else it was very difficult for me because of my lack of physicality.”
Baiily has spent two years at Old Trafford since moving to England from Villarreal in Spain, largely impressing with his displays but ultimately unable to hold down a regular place in Mourinho’s starting XI due to niggling injuries.
Lindelof has endured a more difficult start to life in Manchester since arriving from Benfica last summer, with this latest performance adding to his growing list of poor displays in the famous red shirt.
