Graeme Souness believes that Mourinho is sitting in a very ‘precarious position’ after Manchester United’s 3-2 defeat by Brighton on Sunday.

Jose Mourinho cut a frustrated and desperate figure on the touchline during his teams 3-2 loss against Brighton in the Premier League on Sunday, unable to influence proceedings with his substitutions and seemingly lacking any ideas in the face of adversity.

The Red Devils were dismantled by Chris Hughton’s spirited Seagull’s in the first half, who were great value for their 3-1 lead going in at the break.

Defensively, Man United were all at sea for all three of the goals they conceded, with the centre-back pairing of Victor Lindelof and Eric Baiily struggling to contain the likes of Glen Murray and Pascal Gross upfront for Brighton.

Despite goals from Romelu Lukaku and Paul Pogba – via the penalty spot – Mourinho’s side never really caused Brighton any problems at the back and couldn’t get to grips with the game in midfield.

Souness hinted at the possibility of all not being well behind the scenes at the club, suggesting that Mourinho might have ‘lost the dressing room’, which does not bode well for his immediate future at Old Trafford.

Souness told Sky Sports: “He is in a very difficult place, isn’t he? We think he fell out with the Chelsea players and that ultimately cost him his job.

“As a manager, you have to push them and push them to the point where you are almost falling out with them but you cannot cross that line otherwise you end up falling out with two or three of the top men and they can get you out of the door.

“Two or three becomes six or seven and six or seven becomes 12 or 13. Then all of a sudden, that old chestnut is leaked to the press that he has lost the dressing room.

“So I think he is in a very precarious position right now if that is what they can give us on a football pitch.”

Man United must now turn their attention to a home clash with Tottenham next Monday, which will no doubt be another tough examination of the squad considering the fact that Spurs have started the season with back-to-back victories.
