Paul Merson sends advice to Man United star Luke Shaw
The Arsenal legend issues a challenge to Man United star Luke Shaw
Paul Merson has told Luke Shaw that the Manchester United defender needs to push himself in order to stay at the top of the game.
Shaw scored United’s second goal in their 2-1 victory over Leicester in the Premier League season’s curtain-raiser last Friday.
His goal will come as a welcome relief for a player who has struggled to capitalise on his promising start at Old Trafford.
Shaw famously suffered a double leg fracture on his Champions League debut for Manchester United in 2014 and has never quite recaptured his form going into that game.
Former Arsenal star Merson believes complacency may be to blame for Shaw’s stop-start career at Manchester United.
“The easiest thing in the world is to get the top,” Merson told Sky Sports’ The Debate.
“The challenge is to stay at the top.”
Mourinho has accused Shaw of being overweight on a number of occasions and then has appeared to go back on these criticisms in other instances.
Perhaps this has been a motivational tactic from Mourinho, but Merson believes Shaw needs to commit himself in order to have a successful career as he appeared to rest on his laurels after arriving at Old Trafford as the then-most expensive teenager in world football at a price of £30m.
Merson knows what it takes to stay consistent in elite level football as he stayed at that level for the best part of 20 years, and so it is worth Shaw heeding his warning.
