Kevin Kilbane has warned Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho that Matteo Darmian is a very poor player.

The Italy international was linked with a potential return to Serie A in the current transfer window.

Darmian struggled to hold down a starting spot in the Manchester United team following competition from Antonio Valencia, Luke Shaw and Daley Blind.

The Red Devils have signed Diogo Dalot in a £17m deal from Portuguese outfit FC Porto at the start of the summer transfer window.

Darmian started their opening Premier League game of the 2018-19 season as Manchester United eased to a 2-1 win over Leicester City.

Former Everton and Irish full-back Kilbane isn’t a big fan of the Italian defender.

“Darmian is a poor player,” Kilbane told Irish radio station Newstalk. “He is a very poor player.

“Someone said he was the next Denis Irwin when they signed him. I almost laughed. He is not good enough.”

Manchester United finished in second place in the Premier League table last term to secure their best return since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement.

The Red Devils ended up 19 points adrift of champions Manchester City to highlight the gap between the two derby rivals.

Manchester United managed to finish above Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool FC and Chelsea FC in the top-four race.
