Gary Neville reacts to Man United’s failure to sign top 29-year-old
Gary Neville admits he was not happy that Man United were not able to sign Toby Alderweireld this summer
Gary Neville has admitted his disappointment that Manchester United were not able to get a deal over the line for Toby Alderweireld this summer.
The Red Devils were heavily linked with a move to bring the Tottenham Hotspur defender to Old Trafford in the summer months but a switch failed to materialise as the Belgian ended up staying at Tottenham Hotspur.
Manchester United ended up only having signed three new players this summer after tying up deals for Diogo Dalot, Fred and Lee Grant.
It seemed certain that the Red Devils were to bring in a new defender this summer but a switch failed to materialise before the deadline last week.
And Neville was clearly not happy at the Red Devils’ failure to sign Alderweireld ahead of Jose Mourinho’s third season in charge at Old Trafford.
Speaking in an interview with Sky Sports, Neville said: “You think of Alderweireld, which to me seemed like a certainty that Manchester United would sign Alderweireld.
“It’s not too much at £50m because ultimately you’ve just got to get the players in. That’s the main thing, get the players in.”
Manchester United got their Premier League campaign off to a winning start on Friday night when they claimed a 2-1 victory over Leicester City at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils will be aiming to challenge for the title this season after having finished second in the table and without a trophy last term.
