The Sun is reporting that the Portuguese side are keen on a move to sign the Italian defender this summer after he fell out of favour at Old Trafford under Jose Mourinho last season.
The 28-year-old Italy international only started a total of five games in the Premier League for the Red Devils last season as they ended up in second place and without a trophy.
His lack of playing time has inevitably prompted speculation linking Darmian with a move away from Manchester United in search of regular first-team football.
Now, it is being claimed that Benfica is a realistic destination for the defender this summer.
However, the same report quotes unnamed sources in Portugal as saying that the defenders wage demands could prove a problem for Benfica.
Meanwhile, Mourinho is currently preparing for his second season in charge of the Red Devils as he bids to try and steer them to a trophy next term.
The Red Devils have not won the Premier League title since their famous final triumph under Sir Alex Ferguson back in 2013.
