Jerome Boateng would bring leadership to the Manchester United defence, according to ESPN FC pundit Shaka Hislop.

The Bayern Munich centre-half has been linked with a potential move to Manchester United over the past few days following a disappointing World Cup campaign.

The German star has experience playing in the Premier League following a 12-month stint at Manchester City in 2010-11 season before Boateng’s move to Bayern.

Manchester United have been left frustrated in their pursuit of a new centre-half after being linked with a move to sign Leicester defender Harry Maguire, Tottenham Hotspur’s Toby Alderweireld and FC Barcelona’s Colombian Yerry Mina.

The Red Devils boss has Eric Bailly, Victor Lindelof, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo at his disposal but the centre-halves have all struggled with issues over their form and injuries.

Former West Ham goalkeeper Hislop believes Boateng would be a great addition to the Manchester United team ahead of Thursday’s 17:00 BST deadline.

“I think despite Boateng’s injuries that he brings leadership to Man United, which they don’t have,” Hislop told ESPN FC.

“They don’t have leadership. He will make them better.”

Manchester United finished in second place in the Premier League table last term to miss out on a Champions League spot.

The Red Devils have signed Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred, FC Porto defender Diogo Dalot and Stoke City goalkeeper Lee Grant.
