Jose Mourinho predicts 28-year-old will stay at Man United
The Manchester United manager doesn't expect Matteo Darmian to leave before Europe's summer transfer window finishes
Jose Mourinho has ruled out Matteo Darmian leaving Manchester United before the close of the transfer window in Italy and Spain.
The Italy international has been regularly linked with a potential return to Serie A this summer after struggling to impress at Old Trafford.
Serie A champions Juventus have often been touted as a destination for Darmian, while San Siro outfit Inter Milan are also thought to be suitors for the Manchester United star.
Darmian has struggled to hold down a starting spot in the Manchester United team since Mourinho took over the reins from Louis van Gaal in May 2016.
The Italian full-back is facing increased competition for a starting place after Mourinho signed Diogo Dalot in a £17m deal from Portuguese giants FC Porto this summer.
Darmian will have to compete with Dalot as well as Antonio Valencia, Luke Shaw and Marcos Rojo for a starting spot at full-back to raise questions about his future.
The former Torino defender started their opening Premier League game of the 2018-19 season as Manchester United eased to a 2-1 win over Leicester City at Old Trafford last week.
Speaking at his media conference ahead of Manchester United’s trip to Brighton on Sunday, Mourinho ruled out Darmian calling time on his Old Trafford career.
“I don’t think he’ll go,” Mourinho said. “He cannot have any bad feelings towards us because we opened the door for him, in case his desire was to go, but it looks like it’s not going to end in a transfer and, for me, it is good news.”
