Jamie Redknapp praises Jose Mourinho for key Man United decision
The Liverpool FC legend was delighted to see Jose Mourinho hand Paul Pogba the Manchester United captaincy
Jamie Redknapp has praised Jose Mourinho’s decision to hand Paul Pogba the Manchester United captaincy.
The Red Devils club record signing was linked with a potential exit at Old Trafford during the 2018 summer transfer window following a fractious relationship with Mourinho.
The Manchester United manager wasn’t afraid to criticise his star player in the British media to raise questions about Pogba’s long-term future at the club.
Pogba won the World Cup back in July after the former Juventus midfielder scored in France’s 4-2 win against Croatia in the showpiece to answer his critics.
Mourinho gave Pogba the captain’s armband for the visit of Leicester City and the France international scored their first goal in a 2-1 win against the Foxes.
Former Liverpool FC midfielder Redknapp believes Mourinho deserves credit for giving Pogba the captain’s armband for the opening weekend of the Premier League.
“Handing the captain’s armband to Paul Pogba was a smart move from Jose Mourinho,” Redknapp told the Daily Mail.
“I argued in Sportsmail last week that the Manchester United captaincy could be the making of Pogba. Jose clearly thinks it might be the way to repair their relationship.
“You only have to look at behind the scenes clips from the World Cup final to see that he is captaincy material. Hugo Lloris may have been the France skipper but the respect shown to Pogba from the players was incredible.
“By giving him this responsibility, Mourinho is recognising that his midfielder is the main man at Old Trafford and challenging him to prove it. Pogba gave his manager the perfect response against Leicester with a commanding display.”
Manchester United haven’t won the Premier League title since 2013 when Sir Alex Ferguson was still in charge of the Old Trafford outfit.
The Red Devils finished in the top four in the 2017-18 season for just the second time since Ferguson’s retirement.
Manchester United signed Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred, FC Porto defender Diogo Dalot and Stoke City goalkeeper Lee Grant in the 2018 summer transfer window.
