Manchester United made a late bid to sign Liverpool FC defender Virgil van Dijk back in December, according to a report in England.
The Daily Mail is reporting that the Red Devils launched a last-ditch effort to sign Van Dijk from under Liverpool FC’s noses ahead of the January transfer window.
The same article states that Jose Mourinho was keen on a swoop to sign the Netherlands international from Southampton to bolster the Manchester United defence.
According to the same story, Van Dijk was scheduled to undergo a medical at Liverpool FC when Manchester United contacted Southampton over a potential deal.
Van Dijk has already made a positive impact on the Liverpool FC team after the 27-year-old played a key role in their run to the Champions League final in Kiev.
The Dutch centre-half was powerless to prevent Liverpool FC from losing 3-1 to La Liga giants Real Madrid in the Champions League showpiece.
Liverpool FC were 4-0 winners against West Ham United in their Premier League opener at Anfield earlier this month.
The Reds eased to a 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace thanks to Van Dijk’s composed performance at the back.
Liverpool FC finished in fourth place in the Premier League table last term.
