Paul Merson is tipping Newcastle United to hold Tottenham Hotspur to a goalless draw in their Premier League opener this weekend.

The Magpies are preparing to welcome the north London club to St James’ Park as they look to try and get the new campaign off to a positive start under Rafael Benitez.

Spurs travel to Newcastle United on Saturday lunchtime looking to get their season off to a strong start after the Lilywhites ended up in third place in the table last term under Mauricio Pochettino.

And former Arsenal star Merson is backing both of the teams to share the spoils in an uninteresting goalless draw in the Premier League opener.

Speaking in an interview with Sky Sports, Merson said: “This is a tough one. This was an early game last year, and Spurs got a couple of late goals, but I feel they’ll find it hard due to the World Cup.

:Spurs just haven’t got their players back. Rafa Benitez will make them hard to beat. Spurs won’t have the goals early on so Newcastle will hold on this year. I’m going for a goalless draw.”

Tottenham will be aiming to be one of the main title contenders this season as they bid to try and win their first trophy under Pochettino.

The Lilywhites have earned plenty of praise for their development under the Argentine manager but they have thus far failed to translate their promise and strong performances into silverware.

They reached the FA Cup semi-finals last season but ended up being beaten by Manchester United.
