The Spain international moved to the west London side in a world record deal for a goalkeeper after Chelsea FC activated the Athletic Bilbao shot stopper’s £71.6m contract release clause.
Kepa’s fee has eclisped the £67m fee that Liverpool FC spent on Alisson Becker last month after the Merseyside outfit won the race to sign the AS Roma goalkeeper.
The 23-year-old has made 54 appearances for Athletic Bilbao since Spain’s second-choice goalkeeper broke into the Basque side’s starting XI two seasons ago.
Kepa is tasked with replacing Thibaut Courtois in the Chelsea FC team ahead of the new Premier League campaign after the Belgium international moved to Real Madrid following months of speculation.
Former Arsenal midfielder Merson delivered his verdict on Chelsea FC signing Kepa.
“In time, it could be a good transfer, but not now,” Merson told Sky Sports.
“This is going to be hard for Kepa, he will probably turn out to be great, but that is a lot of money for a kid and in goalkeeping terms, he is a kid. It’s very rare you get goalies that young going for that much. It’s a lot of money.”
Chelsea FC finished in fifth place in the Premier League to miss out on a spot in the Champions League for the second time in three seasons.
The Blues have signed Napoli midfielder Jorginho, veteran goalkeeper Rob Green, Real Madrid midfielder Matteo Kovavic and Kepa this summer.
The west London side won the FA Cup thanks to a 1-0 win over Manchester United last term.
