Chris Sutton has admitted that he is staggered Lucas Torreira is still waiting for his first Premier League start for Arsenal.

The Uruguay international moved to Arsenal in a £26m deal from Italian side Sampdoria in the 2018 summer transfer window.

Torreira was one of the stars of the World Cup after the defensive midfielder helped Uruguay to reach the quarter-finals.

The 24-year-old has been limited to substitute appearances at Arsenal despite his positive impact from the bemch.

Torreira was particularly impressive coming off the bench to help the Gunners beat Southampton.

The South American was widely praised for his impact in a 2-1 win over Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Saturday.

Former Chelsea FC striker Sutton questioned why Emery is so reluctant to start Torreira in the Premier League.

“Why is Torreira not starting for Arsenal in midfield?” Sutton told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“He is a pocket rocket. He is a dynamo. He should be starting.”

Arsenal haven’t won the Premier League title since 2003-04 when the Gunners finished the season unbeaten.

The Gunners lost 2-0 to Manchester City at The Emirates in their season opener before a 3-2 defeat by Chelsea FC.

Emery’s side are in seventh place in the Premier League table ahead of bitter rivals Manchester United.
