Graeme Souness believes that Arsenal’s Petr Cech is still one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League.

Arsenal have won their last five matches in all competitions and are starting to look like a real force under their new manager Unai Emery.

Defeats against Manchester City and Chelsea in their opening two games suggested it would be a difficult year for Arsenal, but the Gunners have bounced back in style to emerge as real contenders for a place in the top four.

One man who has been integral to the club’s resurgence is Petr Cech, who put in a stellar performance during a 2-0 win against Everton on Sunday – his first clean sheet this term.

The Arsenal shot-stopper has been one of the best goalkeepers in world football for well over a decade, with spells at The Emirates and across London with Chelsea, but he has received criticism in recent years for his inconsistent displays.

However, it appears that Cech is getting back to his best under Emery, as Souness touched upon when talking to Sky Sports last weekend.

“What this manager has done to Petr Cech is, he’s increased his workload and his thought process,” said Souness. “A big part of being a top goalkeeper is decision making and now on top of all that this manager is asking him to make equally critical decisions with his feet.

“He’s now thinking do I put my foot through the ball or am I tempted to play out from the back, and if so where do make the pass.

“So he’s doubled his workload and old dog, new tricks comes to mind but there’s no doubting his goalkeeping in the old sense. He’s up there with the very best still.”

Cech may be rested for Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup tie against Brentford, but he should make a swift return to the starting line-up for Arsenal’s next Premier League game.

Emery’s side will take on Watford at the Emirates on Saturday and will be expected to maintain their winning run, as they bid to stay in touch with their rivals at the top of the table.
