Stuart Pearce has ruled out Arsenal finishing in the Premier League’s top four this season.

The Gunners eased to a 2-0 win against Everton at The Emirates on Sunday afternoon thanks to goals from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette.

Arsenal are in sixth spot in the Premier League table and a point behind fourth-placed Watford ahead of their meeting in north London next weekend.

Unai Emery’s side will be hoping to secure a return to the Champions League after a two-season absence following fifth and sixth-placed finishes over the past two seasons.

The north London side signed five new players in the summer transfer window to improve Emery’s squad ahead of his first season in charge.

Arsenal were 4-2 winners against Vorskla at The Emirates on Thursday night to get their Europa League campaign of to a winning start.

Former Manchester City defender Pearce believes the Gunners will miss out on a top-four finish this season so need to take the Europa League seriously.

“I don’t think Arsenal can get in the top four this season,” Pearce told Sky Sports. “Therefore the cup games are vital for them.”

Arsenal have signed Stephan Lichtsteiner, Bernd Leno, Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi in the summer transfer window.

The Gunners lost to Manchester City and Chelsea FC in their opening two Premier League fixtures.
