Matteo Guendouzi has revealed that he drew huge amounts of inspiration from the likes of Thierry Henry and Patrick Vieira growing up.

Guendouzi has been settling into life at The Emirates after having signed for the Gunners from Ligue 2 side Lorient in the summer transfer window.

The 19-year-old has been a regular fixture in the first team at Arsenal under new boss Unai Emery and he has impressed with some mature performances for the north London club.

Guendouzi was an unused substitute on Sunday as Arsenal claimed a 2-0 win over Everton in the Premier League.

The youngster has revealed that he was a passionate Arsenal fan growing up and he has pointed to the likes of Henry and Vieira as key figures in his footballing development.

Speaking in an interview with French newspaper L’Equipe, Guendouzi said: “Growing up, I watched other teams and I fell in love with Arsenal.

“I wasn’t really interested in posters but I saw many, many videos.

“Players like Thierry Henry and Patrick Vieira made me love the club and I dreamt of going there.

“When I see the Emirates and the statue of Henry, I think back to those videos. From the moment Arsenal made an approach, everything was clear for me.

“I’m not going to lie, I thought it would happen later in my career. But joining such a club at 19, any player would like that.”

Guendouzi will be hoping to feature for Arsenal when the Gunners return to League Cup action on Wednesday night with a third-round clash against Brentford.

The north London side have taken 12 points from their opening six Premier League games as they look to try and break back into the top four this season under their new manager.

They finished in sixth place and without a trophy under Arsene Wenger last term.
