Unai Emery has played up Mesut Ozil’s chances of returning to the Arsenal line-up in Sunday’s game away at Cardiff.

Ozil was said to have missed the West Ham win with illness after the former Germany international has experienced a turbulent few months.

Emery insists that Ozil has been training with the first-team squad all week and that he has been assessing the German’s fitness every day.

“He’s training normally with the group, in every session this week,” Emery said at the Arsenal news conference on Friday.

“We started on Tuesday and every day he has been training with the group. He’s OK.

“Also, I’m looking at him well every day.”

Ozil was part of Germany’s disastrous campaign at the World Cup in Russia this summer, where Der Mannschaft exited at the group stage for the first time in their history.

In the fall out of the exit, Ozil was criticised for his perceived poor performances in Germany as well as being photographed with controversial Turkish leader Recep Erdogan before the competition.

Ozil insisted that he met Erdogan as it was his duty to accept an invitation to the office of president in the country where his family hailed, and also that he had performed better than certain Bayern Munich players at the World Cup.

Stats tended to agree with Ozil, but his defence didn’t stop overwhelmingly negative press in Germany which lead to him subsequently hanging up his international boots in protest.
