Unai Emery has urged Arsenal to tie Nacho Monreal down to a new contract in the coming months.

Monreal has been getting used to life under new manager Emery following the Spaniard’s appointment as Arsene Wenger’s successor at The Emirates back in May.

The Spanish defender has scored one goal in three Premier League appearances for the Gunners so far this season and he has been in solid form for the north London side in recent months.

Monreal’s current contract at Arsenal is due to expire at the end of this season, and Emery has admitted that he wants the north London side to make giving him a new deal one of their priorities.

Asked about Monreal at a news conference at London Colney on Thursday, Emery said: “First, I knew Nacho Monreal in Spain when he was playing in Osasuna and in Malaga.

“After six years here, I came and I know him as a new Nacho Monreal.

“After two weeks, after two months and now, I can say that I am very happy with him because he is 32 years old but I think physically, with his performances with us in matches, he is playing with a very good level. The rest of that, for me, is very important.

“I think we need to find a new contract with him to stay with the Arsenal team.”

Meanwhile, Arsenal are currently preparing for their Premier League trip to Newcastle United on Saturday afternoon.

The north London side are aiming to at least try and break back into the top four this season after they finished in sixth place in the table and without a trophy under Arsene Wenger last term.

The Gunners have not won the Premier League since their famous unbeaten triumph in the 2003-04 season under Wenger.
