Ex-Arsenal defender Nigel Winterburn has called for patience as Unai Emery aims to implement his philosophy at the Emirates.

The Spanish boss succeeded Arsene Wenger in the hot seat at the club this summer and has already gone about stamping his own mark on the club with his activity in both the transfer market and the training ground.

Losses against Manchester City and Chelsea at the start of the new season have been followed up with wins against West Ham and Cardiff City as Arsenal have clearly been trying to play with a new fluid style.

The problem so far has been the fact that Emery’s men have already conceded 8 goals, looking extremely vulnerable in defence as they try to play out from the back to fall in line with the manager’s beliefs.

Sokratis and Stephan Lichtsteiner were brought in over the summer to shore things up at the back and the former has started all four of Arsenal’s games, but he has so far looked very shaky leading the back four.

However, Winterburn insists that supporters should not be expecting too much from Arsenal too soon, given the fact that a new era is being ushered in at the club.

He told Goal on Tuesday: “It’s going to be a slow process. I think we were a little bit naive if people thought the new manager would come in and everything would be absolutely fine.”

An away trip to Newcastle beckons for Arsenal on Saturday, which will be another tough test for the team, but supporters will be expecting them to emerge with another three points.

Emery’s tenure has only just begun and thusly major improvements won’t be seen overnight, but Arsenal certainly have enough talent in their squad to challenge for a place in the top four come May.
