Martin Keown has claimed that Olivier Giroud and Alvaro Morata hold the key to Chelsea FC’s title challenge this season.

The Blues have made an encouraging start to life under new Chelsea FC manager Maurizio Sarri following his appointment as Antonio Conte’s replacement in the summer.

Eden Hazard has been the west London side’s standout player so far following an exciting start to the campaign with five goals in six Premier League appearances.

The Belgian star netted a superb goal in a 2-1 win over Liverpool FC in the Carabao Cup third round at Anfield on Wednesday night.

Chelsea FC are in third place in the Premier League table and two points adrift of leaders Liverpool FC after a goalless draw at West Ham United last weekend.

While Hazard has been talked up as Chelsea FC’s key player, there are concerns about their ability to score goals given the form of their strikers.

Morata has struggled to hit the ground running since his move from Real Madrid last summer and Giroud is an inconsistent finisher in front of goal.

Former Arsenal defender Keown believes Chelsea FC can run Liverpool FC and Manchester City close if Giroud and Morata hit form.

“You can already see Maurizio Sarri’s plans are being put in place by his players,” Keown told the Daily Mail. “The Italian is hardly ever out of his seat barking orders on the touchline because he doesn’t need to. He’s already got them all well briefed.

“Every player has a plan of action, in and out of possession. No one is looking around wondering where they should be. He wants his team to be effective offensively and effective defensively. The clubs that find that balance quickly are the ones who challenge for the title.

“The critical thing for Chelsea is their two centre forwards are not scoring. That is a real worry. Diego Costa has never been replaced. Get Alvaro Morata and Olivier Giroud contributing goals then maybe Chelsea won’t be as far behind Manchester City and Liverpool as Sarri claims they are in his press conferences.”
