Thibaut Courtois on why he still ‘loves’ Chelsea FC
Thibaut Courtois insists he still loves Chelsea FC after his move to Real Madrid this summer
Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois insists he still loves Chelsea FC after moving to Real Madrid this summer.
Courtois made 154 appearances for Chelsea over a 7-year spell with the club and won two Premier League titles as the club’s number one shot-stopper.
The 26-year-old quickly established himself as one of the best ‘keepers in the Premier League, impressing fans and experts alike with his commanding presence and agility between the sticks.
The Belgium international won the Golden Glove award at this summer’s World Cup in Russia as his country finished in third place, but he returned to club duty in London with his heart set on a new challenge.
Courtois forced through a move to European champions Real Madrid during the transfer window and in doing so alienated much of the fan base at Stamford Bridge.
However, he insists that he did what was best for the club and feels ‘upset’ in the wake of the backlash he has received from supporters since making the switch to Spain.
As per the Evening Standard, he told reporters on Sunday: “It [the reaction from some fans] makes me feel sad and obviously they don’t know all the truth.
“I think in March the decision was already made and I thought the club would accept it. Then because the transfer window closes I did not show up because I thought it better not to disturb the team and the squad.
“If I did go there maybe, I didn’t want to be toxic, so obviously it is a pity because I love Chelsea.”
Courtois made his first start for Los Blancos before the international break, helping the team to a 4-1 victory against Leganes in La Liga.
