John Barnes rates Chelsea FC and Man United’s title hopes
John Barnes is tipping Chelsea FC, Tottenham and Man United all to challenge for the title
Former Liverpool FC midfielder John Barnes has given his take on the title aspirations of Chelsea FC, Spurs and Manchester United this season.
Chelsea have made the perfect start to their 2018-19 campaign, securing maximum points, while their London rivals Tottenham have managed to secure nine points out of a possible 12.
Manchester United meanwhile, have struggled to keep up with the early pacesetters, losing two of their opening four matches to fall six points behind already.
Chelsea FC appear to be playing with a new freedom under Maurizio Sarri’s leadership, while Spurs seem to be picking up where they left off last year by continuing their steady progress towards a title charge.
Both sides look capable of challenging for the trophy this season but the jury is still out on Man United’s chances, who are hoping to improve on their runners-up finish in the Premier League last term.
However, footballer turned pundit Barnes is refusing to rule out Jose Mourinho’s side, although he does believe that their local rivals Man City will ultimately emerge victorious once again.
Speaking in an interview with the Daily Star, Barnes said: “Well of course I think Tottenham [are in the title race].
“Man United are going to come into it – four games have gone, so we can’t get carried away, positively or negatively with any teams there.
“Come the end of the season, Man United will be there, Tottenham will be there, Chelsea will be there again.
“And I don’t think Manchester City will have the season they had last season in terms of being that far ahead of everyone else. I think everybody will be closer to Man City than they were but they are still the favourites.”
All three clubs in question are back in action after the international break this weekend, with Chelsea hosting Cardiff City and Man United travelling to Vicarage Road to face Watford.
Tottenham play first in the standout game of this week’s fixtures against Liverpool at Wembley, which should provide a feast of attacking football and drama.
