Maurizio Sarri talks up ‘very useful’ Chelsea FC summer signing
Maurizio Sarri heaps praise on Jorginho for the strong start he has made to life as a Chelsea FC player
Maurizio Sarri has emphasised the importance of Jorginho in his attempts to transition Chelsea FC away from old boss Antonio Conte’s defensive style of play.
Sarri brought midfielder Jorginho with him from Napoli for £51.3m as the Italian international is the keystone in the brand of football Sarri likes to play.
Jorginho operates as a deep-lying playmaker sitting in front of the back four who turns defence into attack quickly but also acts as a metronome, and Sarri delights in having his star-man at his new club.
“Jorginho in this moment is a very important player for us and he is used to playing my football,” he said at the Chelsea FC news conference on Friday afternoon.
“He is very useful for me, first of all, but also for his team-mates.”
All of Chelsea’s play effectively goes through Jorginho, and his influence was felt most heavily when he was the knife that cut through Arsenal’s defence so cleanly as they surged into an early 2-0 lead in the Blues’ 3-2 win in August.
Sarri is attempting to turn Chelsea into a swift counter-attacking team who are solid defensively and the ability to hold midfielders back whilst on the counter-attack depends heavily on Jorginho’s ability to win or collect the ball near his own box and play accurate long passes to attacking players.
Chelsea travel to Bournemouth on Saturday, a team who are not shy of attacking themselves, and Cherries boss Eddie Howe will have to find a way to shut down Jorginho’s potential for launching counter-attacks when his team attempt to impose themselves on the Chelsea defence.
