Chelsea FC have made an impressive 100 per cent start to the new Premier League season after winning all four of their opening games.
A hard-fought 2-0 win against Bournemouth on Saturday ensured that Maurizio Sarri’s men head into the international break level on points with Watford FC and Liverpool FC at the top of the table.
Sarri has already managed to implement a new style of play at the club which has seen the players expressing themselves more freely on the pitch, with Eden Hazard, in particular, performing at an extremely high level.
However, according to former Arsenal midfielder Merson, Chelsea FC are still some way short of contending for the league title, despite their impressive opening salvo.
He told Sky Sports: “I’m a Chelsea fan and I cannot see them winning the league one bit. There’s a lot of work to be done even though it’s a great start. If Chelsea finish in the top four, I think they’ve had a great season.”
Chelsea supporters might disagree with Merson’s blunt assessment of their team’s chances given the fact that the team seems to be improving quickly, but he is right in pointing out that there is still room for improvement.
Alvaro Morata has struggled to lead the line up front after being preferred in the team to Olivier Giroud so far this year and unless Hazard can shoulder the responsibility of scoring goals on his own then perhaps Chelsea are still missing a consistent goal-scorer to lead them to the title.
