The 27-year-old has widely been criticised for failing to produce consistent performances for the west London club over the last few seasons but he has started the new campaign in brilliant form.
Hazard netted five goals and made two assists in his first six Premier League outings this term, and he scored a superb solo goal for the Blues to help them beat Liverpool FC in the League Cup at Anfield last week.
The playmaker won the PFA player of the year award in 2015 as he helped Chelsea FC to win a League Cup and Premier League double under Jose Mourinho.
And Merson feels that Hazard is on course to enjoy his strongest season yet in a Chelsea FC shirt.
Speaking to the Daily Star, Merson said: “Eden Hazard is the best player in the world right now. His goal at Anfield this week was ridiculous and he could be about to have the season of his life.
“That was a goal good enough to win any game. And it wasn’t against an average team either.
“It looks to me like that manager is letting him play. It’s like Maurizio Sarri has just told him to go out and enjoy himself.
“I’ve played for managers like that and it brought out the best in me. It seems to be bringing out the best in Hazard, too.
“He is scoring more goals and looking dangerous every time he plays.”
Chelsea FC will now switch their attentions back towards Europa League affairs and their home clash against Videoton at Stamford Bridge on Thursday night.
The Blues are aiming to at least break back into the top four this season after they finished fifth and won the FA Cup last term under Antonio Conte.
