Paul Merson points out Chelsea FC weaknesses
Paul Merson explains where he thinks Chelsea FC are still falling short this season

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson believes that Chelsea FC are still lacking in a few areas and doesn’t consider them to be genuine title contenders.
Maurizio Sarri’s men have made the perfect start to the new season with wins against Huddersfield, Arsenal, Newcastle and Bournemouth leaving them currently joint top of the Premier League table.
Chelsea FC had been tipped to fight for a place in the top four by many experts pre-season, but very few believed that the team could mount a title challenge.
So far they are proving everyone wrong but they will soon face tougher challenges as the fixture list produces tougher games over the next few months.
Ex-Arsenal playmaker Merson believes that their shaky defensive set-up will ultimately cost them in a long-term bid for success this year, as he told Sky Sports in the wake of latest their win at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
“I think, attacking wise, great.” said Merson on Sky Sports.
“But back four, I don’t think they can win the league with that back four.
“David Luiz will do something. He needs to be playing in a back three in my opinion. You only have to look at the Newcastle game.
“They’re cruising that and only he knows what he was doing when he went to the head ball. He just waited for it, I don’t know what he was trying to do.
“[Marcos] Alonso plays where he wants to play, he’s got no position, he just goes and plays. When they play against the big boys, they’ll get picked off.”
After the international break, Sarri’s team are scheduled to take on Cardiff City at home and they will be expected to continue their 100% start to the new campaign by picking up another three points against Neil Warnock’s side.
