Chelsea FC boss Maurizio Sarri has expressed his surprise at N’Golo Kante’s technical ability after he moved the Frenchman out of his normal position.

Sarri brought Italian international midfielder Jorginho with him from Napoli for £51.3m who operates as a playmaker in front of the back four.

Kante has made his career in a similar area of the field but to the surprise of many, Sarri included, he has excelled in a role further up the pitch and slightly to the right.

Sarri said at the Chelsea FC news conference at Cobham on Friday: “Kante is a great midfielder.

“He can play any position in my midfield. It’s not a problem for him.

“I was surprised about the technical qualities from Kante.”

Kante first gained serious recognition as the key man in Leicester’s midfield during their glorious title win in 2015/16.

He then moved to Chelsea for a reported £32m where he once again won Premier League honours in his first season with the club.

His crowning moment came this summer when he played a vital role in France’s World Cup winning campaign in Russia.

Much has been made of Chelsea’s midfield as they have six supposed starters competing for a maximum of three positions, and there were some doubts that Sarri would accommodate Kante as his priority was his star-player Jorginho.

However, Kante defied expectations and has once again made himself not only useful, but invaluable to his manager.
