John Arne Riise believes Joe Gomez has established himself as first-choice alongside Liverpool FC centre-half Virgil van Dijk.

The Reds star has been afforded the chance to make a claim for a permanent starting spot in Jurgen Klopp’s team in the absence of Dejan Lovren.

Gomez has seized his opportunity to become an automatic starter after the England international helped Liverpool FC to keep three clean sheets in their opening five Premier League fixtures.

The former Charlton Athletic defender acquitted himself well against one of Europe’s most prolific attacks on Tuesday night.

Liverpool FC eased to a 3-2 win over Paris Saint-Germain in their Champions League opener as Gomez came up against Neymar, Edinson Cavani and Kylian Mbappe.

Former Norwegian defender Riise backed Gomez to continue as Van Dijk’s centre-half partner in the long term.

Riise wrote on Twitter in a public message to Gomez: “You were brilliant mate 🔝⚽️ Stay fit and work hard and nobody can take you’re place mate 👏🏻”

Liverpool FC finished in fourth spot in the Premier League table last term.

Lovren finished the season as Van Dijk’s centre-half partner ahead of Gomez and Joel Matip.

The Reds are looking to win the Premier League title for the first time this season.

Liverpool FC will be bidding to reach successive Champions League finals following a 3-1 loss to Real Madrid last term.
