John Terry has suggested Jose Mourinho is struggling at Manchester United because he is missing out on having big characters in the dressing room.

Mourinho’s side have lost two of their four games so far this season and it is apparent they lack leadership on the pitch.

Terry also suggested United players are not fully committed to Mourinho’s managerial philosophy.

He said in the Daily Mail: “At every club he has had big characters and I’m not sure he has that at Manchester United at the moment.

“At Chelsea, he did.

“You have to stand up and turn up at training every day and show him that you want to win at all costs.

“If you’ve got that, he’s 100 per cent on your side.

“I do think he’ll bring success to United, but it needs patience.”

Terry made 717 appearances for Chelsea FC and was the captain of the side during both of Mourinho’s spells with the club.

There is perhaps no player better suited to give insight into Mourinho’s methods and what keeps his unpredictable former coach happy.

His suggestion that Mourinho’s dressing room needs big characters echoes criticisms levelled at Paul Pogba who was exactly that for France during the World Cup but seems not to be at United.

During Mourinho’s time at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea boasted a spine of Terry, Petr Čech, Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba, whilst often being surrounded by other mentally strong players.

United have nothing like that on their books currently; club captain Antonio Valencia barely plays.

Whilst United’s senior players will not be shirking their responsibilities, Terry’s assessment that each and every player needs to give their all for Mourinho to keep him happy perhaps explains the United boss’s recent melancholy.
