Eden Hazard joked that his moment of magic to secure Chelsea FC’s 2-1 win at Liverpool FC in the Carabao Cup was to help N’Golo Kante avoid the humiliation of having to take a penalty.

The Blues were the better side in the first half of the third-round clash at Anfield but Maurizio Sarri’s side were unable to make the breakthrough in the opening 45 minutes.

Liverpool FC broke the deadlock in the second half thanks to former Chelsea FC striker Daniel Sturridge after his acrobatic goal following Naby Keita’s shot.

January signing Emerson Palmieri levelled for the west London side from close range after Simon Mignolet could only parry an attempt into the full-back’s path.

Hazard came off the bench in the second half despite the looming prospect of their Premier League clash against Liverpool FC at Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening.

The Belgian star netted an 85th-minute winner after Hazard beat three defenders before he placed a finish past his compatriot Mignolet to seal their spot in the fourth round.

Speaking to Sky Sports following the 2-1 win, Hazard explained what inspired his moment of brilliance.

“I spoke with N’Golo on the bench & he told me he didn’t want to take a penalty, so the only solution was to score!” Hazard said.

Chelsea FC are in third place in the Premier League table.
