Jamie Carragher: What I really think of Joe Gomez at Liverpool FC
Jamie Carragher praises Joe Gomez for his solid performances for Liverpool FC this season
Jamie Carragher has suggested that Joe Gomez could keep fellow centre-halves Dejan Lovren and Joël Matip out of the team when they return from injury.
Despite spending most of his career at right-back, the 21-year-old has impressed as a centre-half this season after injuries to Lovren and Matip.
Gomez prefers to play in the centre of defense, and he has impressed Carragher so much this season that the Liverpool FC legend suggested he will now be difficult to oust.
He said on Sky Sports: “Gomez did really well at right-back last season, but it was always evident watching him he was a centre-back of the future.
“Maybe I was thinking more of two or three years’ time.
“But he’s gone in there, he’s got his opportunity with Lovren having a slight injury, Matip the same, and it does look like a partnership going forward for Liverpool.”
Gomez started his career at Charlton where he played at both centre-half and right-back and signed for the Merseyside club for £3.5m in 2015.
His early Liverpool FC career was blighted by injuries and managed just eight appearances for the Reds in his first two years at the club.
However, after making 23 appearances in the league last season, Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp entrusted him to deputise for Lovren and Matip in the centre of defence as the two recovered from injury.
He has played so well that he has once again been called up to the England squad, and now Lovren and Matip will be hard pressed to get their first-team chances when they return.
