The Reds signed the Brazil international in a £39m deal from Ligue 1 side AS Monaco in the 2018 summer transfer window.
Fabinho, though, has been forced to wait to make his first start in the Liverpool FC team despite his big money arrival.
The South American midfielder came off the bench for the final stages of Liverpool FC’s 3-2 win over Ligue 1 side Paris Saint-German in the Champions League group stage last week.
Fabinho was handed his first start in Liverpool FC’s 2-1 loss to Chelsea FC in the Carabao Cup third round on Wednesday night.
The Brazilian finished with 86 per cent pass completion and won four tackles during their narrow defeat by their title rivals.
Former Chelsea FC defender Townsend heaped praise on Fabinho for an assured debut in the cup clash.
“Fabinho has got better as the game has gone on,” Townsend told BBC Sport.
“He has settled in to the role in between the Liverpool central players and keeps it simple.”
Fabinho was part of the AS Monaco team that won the Ligue 1 title ahead of Paris Saint-Germain in the 2016-17 season.
The Reds will make the trip to title rivals Chelsea FC in the Premier League at Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening.
