The England striker has been made to wait for his chances this season but he curled home a brilliant left-footed shot into the top corner in the 89th minute to earn the Reds a point at Stamford Bridge.
Eden Hazard had put Chelsea FC ahead when he fired home a confident finish in the 25th minute, but Sturridge had the final say in the second half.
The striker is yet to start any Premier League games so far this season but he has made five appearances from the bench.
And Ferdinand praised Sturridge for showing the patience needed from the bench as the Reds claimed an important point against the Blues in west London.
Speaking to BT Sport immediately after the game, Ferdinand said: “He hasn’t played a lot of games but Sturridge shows you that when you sit there on the bench and you don’t sulk, you come on and you can change a game.
“What a strike. You could have had two keepers in that goal, and they wouldn’t have saved it.”
Next up for Liverpool FC is a trip to Napoli in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
The draw at Stamford Bridge left the Reds second in the Premier League table but level on points with Manchester City after seven games of the new campaign.
