Jurgen Klopp has insisted he wants Liverpool FC signing Xherdan Shaqiri to play with freedom ahead of their clash against Chelsea FC on Saturday evening.

The Merseyside outfit signed the Switzerland international in a cut price £13.5m deal from Championship side Stoke City in the 2018 summer transfer window.

Shaqiri has previously spent time at Serie A giants Inter Milan and Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich before the Swiss playmaker moved to Stoke in 2015.

The 26-year-old has started Liverpool FC’s last two games and made an assist in a 3-0 win over Southampton before he was powerless to prevent a 2-1 loss to Chelsea FC.

Shaqiri, who has been dubbed the “Swiss Lionel Messi”, has often been criticised for his lack of determination to carry out his defensive duties during his spell at Stoke.

However, Klopp is adamant that he wants Shaqiri to play with freedom in the Liverpool FC team without the responsibility of having to carry out defensive duties.

“When he came in, that was what I wanted from him, to be completely free and just play football,” Klopp told his pre-match media conference.

“I didn’t want to fill him with information about the way he defends, I wanted him only to play football.”

Liverpool FC finished in fourth place in the Premier League table in successive seasons under Klopp to shown signs of progress.

The Reds signed Alisson Becker, Fabinho and Naby Keita as well as Shaqiri in the summer to bolster their squad.
