Jurgen Klopp insists Virgil van Dijk will start if fit when Liverpool FC take on Chelsea FC in the Premier League at Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening.

The Netherlands international moved to Liverpool FC in a £75m deal from Southampton in the January transfer window to bolster Klopp’s defence.

The 27-year-old has made an excellent start to the current campaign alongside Joe Gomez to help Liverpool FC keep four clean sheets in six outings.

The Dutch centre-half suffered an injury problem in the second half of Liverpool FC’s 3-0 win against Southampton at Anfield last weekend.

Van Dijk sat out Liverpool FC’s 2-1 loss to Chelsea FC at Anfield in the Carabao Cup third round on Tuesday night after Eden Hazard’s winner.

The Reds will be desperate to make amends for their League Cup exit when Liverpool FC make the long trip to Chelsea FC in the Premier League.

Speaking at his pre-match media conference at Melwood training ground, Klopp provided an update on Van Dijk’s fitness.

“Virgil is a world-class player, and if you miss a world-class player always it’s not cool,” Klopp said.

“We can play without Virgil, thank God. But I prefer if we can [play him]. The last game he wasn’t available, now we will see for Saturday. But [Dejan] Lovren played his first game in 10 weeks.

“He played an outstanding game. [Joel] Matip, two games in a row, fantastic. If Virgil is fit, he plays. If not, then obviously we have options.”

Liverpool FC finished in fourth spot in the Premier League last term to see off Chelsea FC’s challenge for the final Champions League qualification spot.

The Reds signed Alisson Becker, Fabinho, Naby Keita and Xherdan Shaqiri in the summer transfer window.
