John Barnes believes that having a strong Premier League campaign is more important than winning a trophy this season for Liverpool FC.

The Reds have made a flying start to the new Premier League season and they have won all four of their opening games to leave them leading the way at the top of the table.

Liverpool FC are aiming to establish themselves as one of the main contenders for the Premier League title this season as they bid to try and win their first trophy under Jurgen Klopp.

The Merseyside outfit finished in fourth place in the Premier League table last season under Klopp and earned lots of praise as they ended up as runners-up in the Champions League.

However, Barnes believes that Liverpool FC’s focus this season should be on making sure that they are able to get as close to the top of the table as possible.

Speaking to the Daily Star, Barnes said: “Well, would we rather get silverware and win the League Cup and finish 25 points behind City or finish second behind City by three points and not win silverware?

“That, for me, is more important. That shows progress.

“That shows that you’re going to be consistently challenging at the highest level for the league and that will mean they’ll be challenging in cup competitions.

“So the whole idea of needing silverware, for me, is not as important as getting much closer to the top.

“Because if you’re much closer to the top of the Premier League, that means that you’re consistently winning matches and playing well which would help you in cup competitions as well.

“Yes, it would be nice to win a trophy, but I’d rather not win a trophy and finish second, seven or eight points off the top.”

Liverpool FC will look to make it five wins in a row in the Premier League on Saturday lunchtime when they travel to Tottenham Hotspur in the top flight.

The Merseyside outfit have not yet won a major trophy since Klopp’s appointment at Anfield back in 2015.
